The town that runs North Lombok

Tanjung is the regency seat: the market, the offices, the schools and the weekly trade that the northern coast depends on. It is a working town rather than a resort one, and that gives it a steadier base than the tourist strips further along the coast.

Close to the Gili crossing without paying island prices

Bangsal harbour, where the Gili boats leave, is a short run south. Sire, with its golf course and larger resorts, sits between the two. Tanjung supplies both with staff, goods and housing while costing a fraction of either.

Where the demand actually comes from

Residents first — civil servants, teachers, traders. Then the service economy around the Gili traffic: drivers, boat crew, hospitality staff who need somewhere to live on the mainland. Long-term rental works here. Holiday letting largely does not, because visitors sleep on the islands.

Living here

Quiet, green, and genuinely rural once you leave the main road. Mataram is over an hour, so schooling and healthcare beyond the local level need planning.

Worth asking about

North Lombok was hit hardest by the 2018 earthquakes, so ask about structural repairs on any existing building. Confirm water supply and whether the access road is a written right of way.
